People who pretend the US was founded as a Christian Nation are inaccurate and often use inflammatory rhetoric in an attempt to cast those who prefer reality as radicals.

The Declaration of Independence, the document severing the future US from the United Kingdom, mentions a Creator but does not define anything as being inspired by Christ. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the founding document of this country, makes no mention of the US being a Christian nation.

The founders of the US looked at the horrid mess the blending of religion and government had made in Europe and wisely decided not to establish a state religion, church, etc. They placed in the Constitution the verbiage that no religious test shall ever be required for any office or public trust under the US, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_religious_test_clause. Previous to 1961, this was open to interpretation in the 6 states that had religious requirements stated in their State Constitutions. In 1961 the Supreme Court unanimously rules that this was a violation of the US Constitution and since this time the Article VI section 3 religious test clause has applied universally.

Now, as for "Happy Holidays." This is a generic phrase that acknowledges that there is more than one holiday during the December time-frame. Aside from Christmas and New Year's Eve, there is Boxing Day, Hanukkah , Kwanzaa, Eid-ul-Adha, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Bodhi Day, Yule, St Stephen's Day, just to name a few.

Those people rabidly insisting the MERRY CHRISTMAS is the only acceptable greeting are small minded bigots more interested in pretending outrage than living their alleged Christian beliefs.

It would be better to give a topic. After all, a 'fact' can be interpreted in several ways. As for the diatribe about christmas and 'left' wingers, it's purely emotional- based on hysteria. Thanks!

Left-wing radicals won't say "Merry Christmas" because it violates their fanatical logic of diversity of separation of church and state . Our Constitution was founded on the belief that we are all created equal by God .
Just as Adolf Hitler had crosses removed from churches in Germany , many left-wing radicals are on a campaign to remove the celebration of Christmas as we know it . Even the Christmas tree is banned in some places in the United States .They began with nativity scenes in schools and in public ; and followed up with fanatical elimination of God from landmarks .Hitler wanted to be worshiped as God . The new democrat party ( would-be socialists ) are following too close to Hitler for comfort . Germans were afraid to speak up to Hitler . What's the excuse now ?
