Usually the eye patch is only necessary for the duration of the eye anaesthetic drops to wear off. Some doctors insist on having the eye patched for 1-2 days, however studies have shown no difference in the healing of corneal laceration and corneal ulceration if a patch is worn or not.

In practical terms, when I treat an eye with a superficial corneal laceration or abrasion, it is my practice to advise the patients to wear the patch home and thereafter the patch can usually be removed the following morning.

Cuts on the cornea HAVE to be patched!
As one blinks their eyes,a cut on the cornea will be contiually rubbed and will not heal properly as it will keep the cornea irritated.
Generally speaking though hard to tell without knowing more details about the cut on the cornea, patching will last only about 3-5 days.
The cut on the cornea has to "fill" in and depending on a person's individual healing abilities and if the eyelid keeps rubbing on the cornea it will delay the healing process and keep the cut from "filling in".
Most people who have such an injury to their eyes are greatful for the patching as corneal injuries are EXTREMELY painful.

PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE do as your Ophthalmologist (I hope you are seeing an Ophthalmologist and not an Optometrist) tells you because it is quite possible that you could lose your eyesight in that eye if you don't.

No,there shouldn't be any blood noticed as a result of a cut on the cornea. I suspect that the blood you are seeing is as a result from whatever else happened at the time you got the cut on your cornea.

This happened to me a long time ago... 21 years, to be exact. I went to an opthomologist who put some antibiotic drops in my eyes, then I had them patched for FOUR DAYS! Maybe the treatment isn't so aggressive these days, but there you have it. It sure did hurt... good luck!
