See my question (above). What do you know - it DID turn out to be the government's fault, after all. They prohibited Eskom to build new power stations from 1998 to 2004. Few people seem to know this coz the ANC is keeping it very qiuet. And now they're trying to deny there's any problem. There are also no problems with crime, the educational system etc.
Of course Eskom could also have been more proactive with backup plans. If they didn't spend so much time and money on getting rid rid of employees with a lighter skin tone, they might have been more prepared.

First off, I am an ex JHB boy. Only us south africans know what robots are, so you will need to call them traffic lights for the okies who live outside Souff Efrica. I think what you experienced may be a brown-out. When the demand for power overwhelms the system. Better ask Escom or Kelvin Power Station because the government will not be the one to blame i think.

Its Eskom's fault. They are ridiculous!!! its their infrastructure that's the problem and they should actually change the whole deal not just patch up as they've been doing all along. They don't understand maintanance. They claim it will be too costly to do that. Whereas, if they had saved money from their profits and not squandered it in humongous bonuses, there would be some in their reserves enough to cover the whole mess.
They call themselves business people, yeah right.

It's all over the news...turn on the radio and when the next news bulletin comes on you will hear what they have to say about it. One thing I did hear is that the problem is not as big as they thought it was, so it should be sorted out soon! Thank G-d there is still electricity in my area! :-)

I can't think what could have caused it and how it can be resolved, but I do think it has got nothing to do with the government.
Thanks Mantenga for a point of correction re: robots.

Basic amenities breaking down? What a shocker. No, it's not the government's fault, never is. It's apartheid's fault. Isn't everything?
