I just got of the phone with my OB's 'doctor on call'. I explained i'm 19 wks pg and have been constipated for 2-days and had torn interanlly. He told me to do a suppository, which i already had but it made me bleed and the pain was excrutiating. So he said to do a water enema but as i'd told him the external pain is incredible and is making me vomit and shake. But since he's not my regular OB (who won't be in office till tomorrow) this was all he could tell me. Well, i finally got my bowel issue sorted today but the external pain is still of the chart. I can't sit proporly and i'm swollen and i'm wondering if there are any creams i can use. I'm still not familiar with American pharmaceuticals and now i can't get that OB back on the phone for advice. I used a Douche to clean the external area which helped but i think i need a cream to sooth the burning and irritation. I'm so sorry for the tmi but i can not get this doctor back on the line and i'm really sore.
Thank you in advance.

Sounds like you have hemorrhoids from the strain, so try some hemorrhoid cream and Tucks pads. Both are safe for pregnancy.

Sounds like you ended up with some hemmeroids on top of your soreness. Which is common both with constipation and especially pregnancy.

First off you need to make sure you're eating enough fiber. Get a can of benefiber from the store and put it on your breakfast cereal, or in your morning juice, or even in your water. Atleast once a day, twice is even better. its ONLY fiber and perfectly safe when pregnant.

You also need to make sure you're getting atleast four 8 ounce glasses of water a day. AT LEAST. Your body makes more toxins when youre pregnant, and as a result it uses more water. Plus you have more blood which means your body uses more water to regulate your body heat. You simply need more water when pregnant. Dont avoid drinking it.

Second, he should NOT have been advising you to use a suppository at nearly 5 months and after only two days without a bowel movement. Thats unacceptable. Partly because this is what can happen to your anus, and secondly because suppositories are stimulants and GREATLY increase your risk of contractions and preterm labor. Its a risk he should not have advised you to take.

Next time, go out and get yourself a stool softener, something like phillips, or colace.

As for the pain you have right now, you can try some witchhazel, or regular hemmeroid cream such as preperation-H, both will reduce the swelling and irritation, although they will probably sting. It will help with the torn skin.

A better idea is to get a sitz bath, or a squirt bottle with some cool water in it, and squirt your hiney a few times a day. Laying down and not sitting will help as well. That area actually heals very rapidly, and you will not go long with the pain. If you must sit, sit on something frozen, to help reduce swelling and pain.

You need to make sure you have a daily routine to avoid constipation, i promise it only gets worse the longer you're pregnant :) Invest in benefiber, bran flakes, and fresh veggies, and dont underestimate the power of drinking water. if you're still having troubles with constipation after all that, stop taking your prenatal and switch to a regular multi vitamin or flinstons vitamin. Too much iron and too much calcium will stop you right up.

Best Constipation Cures

Okay, if you can not get hold of your regular OB guy and the back up is useless, go not ever hesitate to go to the Emergency Department. And do not drive yourself, call an ambulance if you need to.

As for your current situation, You can try preparation H, tucks pads or even try some cream for diaper rash...that is what they use for kids.

If you feel shaky, light-headed, dizzy or nauseated - go to the hospital.

Now, I don't like the idea of the bleeding. if you have any more bleeding, please go straight to the hospital. They will take care of you over there, you will see warm, caring people, who will not let you leave if you are in pain.

Having a baby and worrying about your life and the babies life is scary enough without something like this. Good Luck.

In my opinion, I'd call and talk to to someone at your local hospital. They have help lines and are great at helping you in all kinds of situations. I think this is something a medical person should help you with so you don't get the wrong information over the Internet.
your health is most important and no one would want to say anything that would make your problems worse. In closing..try and eat more fiber in your diet...make some bran muffins and eat them in the morning or add some bran to your regular cereal. Drink a lot of water to help keep your body flushed out. Yes your body must feel swollen from all the straining. Try sitting on a pillow until you get the medical person's help. Best of luck and God bless you during these 9 months. You will be so proud and thrilled when you hold your new child....enjoy your baby they grow up so fast...

Sincerely,

Hi Katrina, I am a nurse and hope I can be of help. For external reliief, get some medication for hemorrhoids. This medication will numb the area so it isnt so sore and tender, and also help to reduce the swelling. I am assuming that your rectal bleeding and tenderness is from hemorrhoids or having to strain to pass your stool. You might try adding more fluid to your diet or adding fiber to keep your stools soft and easy to pass. Certainly, pay attention to any continuous bleeding that you have as it may mean something more serious. I have recommended a medication called Preparation H to my clients during and after their pregancies with good results. Hope this helps and that you'll soon feel better! Best wishes, Fred, RN

ooo. Sounds like a whole lotta not fun for you.

Try Neosporin CREAM (the Cream absorbs into the skin better than the ointment) *with Pain Relief*..it has a topical anesthetic to deaden the pain.

I also find that Gold Bond medicated spray cools and soothes very quickly (and leaves you with a lovely tingling sensation), but it does tend to wear off a little faster.

So maybe spray the Gold Bond on for the immediate feel better and then rub on some Neosporin to prolong the effect. A little Tylenol probably won't hurt either.

Good luck hon, I feel for ya!!

Oh I feel bad for you. I know what you are going though. Go get Prep H cooling gel and/or suppositories. If you have not made an appointment with your doc for tomorrow, do it now. You probably need a prescription cream, stronger than over the counter stuff. Try to lay down to get more comfortable. Hope you feel better soon.

umm no joke next time you are constipated try putting your finger up into you vagina and pushing on the back wall where your poop is it breaks up the poop a bit and will help with the constipation my grandma told my mother and my mother told me this so its gotta work right?? plus i don't think its as bad a a supository its worth a try second your veins in your bum get easily aggrivated when your pregnant everyonce in a while if i wear a thong that doesn't agree or pants or sutmhing it happens to me with both pregnancies just use a little preperation H if you use it right away you'll only have to use it once and it won't get a chance to become hemmroids just read it b4 you buy it to make sure it can be used on broken skin if thats what you have but i am sure it fine
good luck being pregnant is sorta gross eh lol

Do not use a douche! It will make things worse. Go to the nearest emergency room. Don't take chances, I was constipated with my daughter and I was 7 months pregnant. I went to the hospital and they took care of me and gave me what I needed. I am almost 6 months pregnant with my son now and I have been constipated but as soon as I get the symptoms, I put a suppository, don't let it get worse.

Get some preparation H cream for hemorrhoids...Tucks also makes a wipe. THat should make it a little more comfortable. You need to get more fibrein your diet. My Dr had me take metamucil every day also to help prevent the constipation. Remember not to strain too hard when trying to have a bowel movement.
