The extra two are what you need to be getting around. Crutches is a form of non-weight bearing support, while a walking boot or other device would be protection from external causes. Basically, you are not actually resting it when walking around, but you can help keep it from more damage with crutches and other support/protection devices. Rest it when you are sleeping.

Resting in R.I.C.E. means to not perform any activities which cause pain, inflammation, or more injury to the strain or sprain.

Since it's nearly impossible to maintain a normal life without walking, the use of a cane or crutches can take the pressure off. A cane works pretty good once you get the hang of it.

I think this all depends on what kind of injury you have. If you must work in a job that doesn't allow you to stay off your feet, your injury will take longer to heal. On the off time, do the RICE method as often as possible. If it has been several days since the injury, heat may help instead of ice.

Quite simply, you don't.

Rest means you rest the injured part. If you can't rest it, you need to as you could do further, sometimes permenant damage.

RICE is

Rest - Rest the affected part
Ice - no more than 20 minutes
Compression - Support bandage
Elivation - Raise the affected part to above heart level (lie down with your leg on a stack of pillows).

Rest
Ice
Compress?
Elevate

WELL, I would say get a pair of crutches then and use them for weight bearing.
