Black Students or Students of Color

"African American" is a term used to describe black people regardless of where their ancestry went or didn't go. It is correct in that (and only in that) if you go back far enough the roots of all black people (and all people period in fact) trace back to Africa. "African American" also includes white people who immigrated from Africa, but I doubt this is what anyone, even the government forms that use the term, have in mind.

"Black Americans" addresses black people who are citizens of the United States.

People of color addresses black people specifically and all people other than white generally.

There is no one term that specifically encompasses ALL of a specific sub-population of the black population (except African American, which could be used for white africans), or the whole of the black race (other than black people). The safest thing to do for the purposes of a paper or essay is to first define a term, even an existing one that is not quite what you want in another context, to both encompass the population you wish and exclude the segments you do not wish to include. You can call them "televisions" if you first define what you mean by that word in this essay.

Define your term concerning both scope and limit and you will avoid problems.

you do no longer pay attention the term Irish American or English American...what you pay attention is , "i'm Irish" or "i'm English" or "i'm Italian" particularly. African American is our background and uncomplicated lifestyle - it distinguishes from different racial communities. the only reason it has a adverse "experience" to it is via the fact particular white human beings ought to make us experience accountable for each little bit of recognition we get. Affirmative action should not be abolished. i do no longer think of you completely understand what that's to make the kind of fact. Are you unaware that racism nonetheless exists? Affirmative action purely evens out the enjoying field....it ensures that in case you reside in an area this is 20% black, one hundred% of your workers are not white - which you have some black workers too. In college, wealthy white human beings get admitted to Ivy league faculties for all time simply by fact of legacies - legacies that blacks don't have simply by fact we've not had the time to acquire the wealth that they've.

I disagaree with Poetic - How can African American be correct usage for people who are and never have been AMERICANS?? I have heard people use the term that way, and it sounds so STUPID. "African-Americans from Jamaica". "African-Americans from England". How can that be right??

Sorry, I don't know what IS the correct term, but it can't be African-American.
