Speculation only : It is known that the majority of the upper echelon of our business and professional world is made up of people who would be diagnosed with ADHD, Bipolar, OCD or some other mental "illness" which they have actually used to motivate, inspire, and drive them to their successes. Based on this, it seems understandable that those driven to a single or strong focus with anything will also "suffer" from lack of normal sleep habits. Stats say the average American only gets 6 1/2 -7 hours of sleep a night. I would guess famous people or highly driven people to get only 4-5 hours a night with some nights being completely sleepless.

A couple years ago I did some research into the life of Elvis Presley. He had some amazing sleeping habits. Because he was an entertainer, whether on the road or in Las Vegas, he had to be very UP for his night-time gigs. So he would take uppers to be ON when he needed to be. So he was really juiced after the gig, around midnight. Definitely not ready to sleep! So he would hang out with his band and entourage until the sun came up. They would go to places that were closed and open them, hang out at home jamming, etc. To get to sleep at around 7:30 AM, had to take downers. Eventually he became addicted to this routine, and as everyone knows, these drugs played a part in his death.

A lot of successful people (not necessarily famous) have the ability to get by on no sleep or very little sleep. So where most of us can only be productive 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, we're competing against people who can be productive 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. That's 60 hours against 140 hours. A lot of success, as Edison said, is perspiration, not inspiration.

Many famous people in Hollywood have the habit of sleeping around with any other hot famous person they can get their hands on (and often with extra-hot unfamous groupies who are awed by their fame.)
