Silly Jimbo...he was genetically engineered to be eternally scruffy for this particular role. Whenever Hugh Laurie has a clean cut role, he just changes his SIM card!
Are you too young to have seen the tv series Miami Vice? Same thing happened for Don Johnson. Really, really.

The scruf is an art form. Hugh was a student of mine a few years ago and he has learned the ways of the Bearded Ones. Although he himself is not one of The Bearded Ones he has a nice beard.
Sean Connery says he is a pussy though.
