A certain rather large part of the Middle East is bound to a holy book that gives them certain guidelines. Among them is slavery.
The Quran not only allows slaves, but explicitly gives the slave- owner the right to have sex with them. There were no Muslim abolitionists because slavery is deeply ingrained in the religion. In fact, the Quran has more to say about enjoying sex with slaves than it does about several of the five pillars of Islam.
Mohammed owned and traded slaves. He commanded that women and children be taken as slaves in battle, and allowed them to be raped after capture. His followers continued the practice for centuries until it was forced to an end in most regions by European armies.
Unfortunately, slavery still persists in dark corners of the Muslim world today, such as Niger, the Sudan, and Mauritania. And, most tellingly, none of the articles by contemporary Muslim apologists (giving their religion retroactive credit for abolition) even bother to address the subject of modern slavery, much less condemn it.
Just like their slave-owning predecessors, today's Muslims are too preoccupied with the promotion of their magnificent religion to be concerned about the plight of slaves - or anyone else suffering under Islamic rule.

mid east, primitive & barbaric? u should do more research b4 u state this...the west? i can say it's advanced but NOT great..advancement doesnt come cheaply..they gambled their morale and self-respect in its name...everything that is going on in the different regions in the world has to do with the people who live and govern such region...different people come and go in different times....now the west is doing well, who knows tomorrow it will be knocking on the mid-east's doors? history is just turning over and over and over...now ur up then ur down...primitive and barbaric is no longer a term for this era for we are now in a civilised period of time(it started somewhere in the mid-east)...if u r not convince, then u fly to dubai and see some of their great minds there...that's just one place,u can xplore more if u like...in the west, they r too advanced that kids/teenage would just rage into schools and shot fellow kids in cold blood, can that be categorised as barbaric? hmmmm.....think about it.

This is a very interesting question, inasmuch as, thousands of years ago, the Middle East was the very cradle of philosophy, architecture, medicine and literature. For example, the pyramids were built while some of our ancestors, in Europe, were painting themselves blue, and living in huts. Sadly, I believe the decline of middle eastern civilization is primarily due to the prevalent religion, Islam. The various sects and divisions in that religion require their followers to think and act certain ways, and to abstain from others. It is also due to the autocratic governments; if you keep your people illiterate, as a lot of those people over there are, especially in the undeveloped portions of those countries, then they cannot learn anything more than what the government tells them.

people are people anywhere... theres smart ones and not so smart ones but to label a certain place or people to be primitive or uncivilized is usually a way to dehumanize them right before u pop a cap in them ..

Although I don't agree with their religion, I do have to acknowledge that they are significantly more religious than America.
Which is greater, wealth without God or poverty with God?
Remember the rich man that could not abandon his wealth to follow Jesus.
What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own immortal soul?
