Its based on an American spelling dictionary or program. Just click ignore and go on. There are a lot of legitimate words I use that it claims are misspelled. Its not worth worrying over.

You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of us because English has evolved in the USA just as it has in England since the days of the Pilgrim Fathers and, short of configuring the spell check to include the differences for the many English speaking countries, the widest user is taken care of.
It seems reasonable that non Americans will at least be competent enough in their own version of English to recognise the regional variations.

And I would have it no other way! For when a non American recognises (NOT recognizes), one's spelling, they can immediately distinguish I'm not a red-neck yahoo!
The more that America distinguishes itself from the rest of the English speaking world the better I say.
Besides, why worry yourself? In a few generations, Spanish will be the language spoken by the majority of those living in America.

Since yahoo is a company based in the USA, run by americans, stock traded on a USA based stock exchange, etc. I think they can use the American English spell checker dictionary.

Yes, I get the same problem. I think the best way is to avoid spell check and have a hand dictionary by the computer.

I think the spellchecker software is produced in the US, which is why you get American spelling. Best to check out with an English dictionary if you are not sure.
