I recently got a great new job at a very big company that everybody knows.

Today everyone on my floor was away at a seminar leaving only me and one of my colleagues, a guy I get on fine with.

We found a rugby ball in the marketing department and began throwing it around. This other guy is much bigger than me and used to play rugby. I still do play rugby but as I've already mentioned, I'm smaller than him. I got the job he's been trying to get for five years and I know he's not happy about it.

So we're passing the ball around, nothing too heated, and then, out of the blue, he takes off his glasses and eyeballs me before charging the entire length of the open space office I work in. For a split second I did consider moving out of the way but the fact is there was a door behind me and given the speed the guy was running at he'd have taken it off its hinges if I'd stepped aside at the last minute. So I dump tackled the guy and now he's in hospital with a broken arm.

I would have a talk with him quick - over a few drinks. I don't think you would get fired for that - it was afterall the other guy's fault for being an idiot - BUT he could make your life difficult, which would make it a difficult work environment which could wind up making you the subject under scrutiny.

You may not get fired for that - but it can put you in an ugly light - which will cause unjust and unfavorable attention due your way - and you may may not get fired for that, but you may get fired for something else down the road.

I would fire you. The company will now have to pay a workers' comp claim due to your mutual stupidity with this person. Maybe if you are lucky, you will only get written up. By the way, what were you SUPPOSED to have been doing while you were playing instead?

(I hope this is a joke and not a real story; if it's real, when the rest of you get all riled up about insurance companies, remember that its is stupidity like this that we all pay for.)
