I actually live in Ann Arbor but I was born in Detroit (Holy Cross Hospital) and I lived on the east side for 25 years. Its hard to beat Detroit for that bombed-out post apocalyptic look. I would love to give any visitor my own special tour of the city. Detroit could have been as great as Chicago had it been managed better. Funny thing how Al Capone chose Chicago and not Detroit. The nice thing about Detroit is that you can do and see everthing in about 3 days. Chicago takes a couple of months or years even. This is what I like to do in Detroit. Go to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Behind the art museum is the Detroit Science center. Across the street from the art museum is the Detroit Historical Museum, definately well worth the walk across the street. Go to Greektown for lunch or dinner. You have to see a show at the Fox Theatre or don't even bother coming to Detroit. My father took me there to see a movie when I was 8 years old (1964) and it has held me spellbound ever since. Across the street is the baseball stadium Comerica Park and also the Detroit Opera House. Both are beautiful enough to blow your mind. A trip to Henry Ford Museum-Greenfield Village is also a must. There's also the Fisher Theater and the Masonic and a few others that I can't think of. The Hart Plaza along the waterfront has festivals all summer long. Leave gaudy jewelry and expensive diamond rings at home unless you want to be robbed. For the grand finale (only to be undertaken during daylight hours) drive around the neighborhood around the Fox Theater and back off of Woodward. Marvel at all the boarded-up businesses and burned out houses and otherwise desolate neighborhoods then ask yourself why and how did this ever happen? Most of Detroit looks this way but I still love it all the same. Like someone else mentioned, stay with the crowds and don't wander far off the beaten path unless of course you are one of those people who is irresistibly drawn to danger. Enjoy!

I personally don't like the Detroit area that much. When I do go I am there for a reason - concert, Auto Show, mall, etc. I would stay in suburbs - Farmington Hills, Novi, Bloomington areas.

They are improving the downtown area by the Cobo Center but just be careful there are some really 'interesting' parts to Detroit. The neighborhoods surrounding the MGM casino is NOT the best - don't wander off there after dark. I had a flat tire there and it was not pretty.

Well..Greektown is generally safe. Lots of police patrolling that area. Be careful if you go to the casinos. There are always cases of people winning at the casinos and then getting followed home and robbed of their winnings. Stay out of the neighborhoods. You take your chances anywhere you go but stay in well populated areas. Popular bars and restaurants should be fine. Never let your guard down. I lived in Detroit for 22 years and was robbed 3 times and that was with street smarts.... It's really not all bad. Especially during the day. Just make sure to stay with the crowds. If you want to go somewhere a bit more safe, though, Baileys in Downtown Dearborn is cool. Also, Downtown Royal Oak is fun and it has more stuff to do than Detroit.

You should visit the African American Museum in Detroit, The Science Center is interesting if have children. Go to Greenfield Village in Dearborn. Hang out downtown at the various bars and venues. The best mall in the area is Somerset which is in Troy MI, which is about 20 minutes from downtown Detroit. If you are staying in a hotel.. try the Athenium. Its connected to a good restuarant called Fishbones and they have a live band there sometimes.

Toward the southwest side is nice, closer to Dearborn, MI. Also try near or in Southfield, MI. The suburbs outside of Detroit are nicer to stay during your visit unless you enjoy the downtown atmosphere. Then I would recommend staying in Detroit's Renaissance Marriott Hotel on Jefferson Ave. Beautiful view of the Detroit River that connects to Canada. Busy downtown atmosphere surrounded by nightclubs, restaurants through Greektown, all which are walking distance. It's pretty safe in all the areas that I recommended. Nothing is super safe so just use your head.

Having lived in suburban Detroit for many years I can honestly say unless you actually live in metro Detroit or in Michigan close to Detroit there is absolutely no reason to go to any part of Detroit, suburbs included. The entire place is a dump, there are a FEW bright spots but they are certainly not worth a trip to see them, pretty much like every other industrial suburban area – a few chain stores, a few “character” themed bars, typical malls, standard junk. You can find that kind of “fun” probably right in your back yard.

It is kind of like asking what should I do if I visit Gary, Indiana or Toledo, Ohio. Why bother?

The only city worth a darn in the Midwest is Chicago – they actually have things to do and some culture – things Detroit is seriously lacking. I have visited Chicago on business and pleasure and it is a fun city.

My advice – save your time, money and perhaps your life and go to a city that actually has something to offer besides crappy casinos, lousy Greek food, blah suburbs, and rampant crime.

The best part to visit to visit in Detroit is not to visit Detroit at all. There . There is alot more to see and do in the suburbs

There is very little to do in Detroit...

A) Red Wings Hockey Game
B) Tigers Baseball
C) Lions Football
D) Greektown Casino
E) Motown Casino
F) MGM Grand Casino
G) Cobo Hall for Auto Show

But thats really about it, the only place where I would really consider going is to Greektown and possibly going to the Casino. If your not visiting the casino or going to a sporting event, Windsor Ontario Canada is preety nice, along with the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

But Downtown Detroit is not a city like Las Vegas where you want to be walking the streets at midnight!

Unfortunately Detroit suburbanites are the areas worst enemy. Detroit is a city filled with interesting places. Downtown Detroit fell apart over the last 40 years, and instead of trying to help the city, the suburbs only verbally beat it up. If you want anyplace USA then by all means go into Mt Clemens or Royal Oak or Roseville. If you want to try interesting Deli's (Mcnallys) or interesting clubs (Centurian) or any of the theatres, which by the way is the largest collection of theatre house outside New York. I agree that there are problems, however go and enjoy the city for all its worth.

I visit Detroit every 2 months. Live about 4 hours away from it. I stay with a friend in the suburbs. Like everyones saying, the suburbs aren't bad at all. Basically anything right past Ford Field to 8 mile is the ghetto. Hell, just about all of Detroit itself is ghetto except downtown. The suburbs do sprawl out though, so I'd definately stay basically anywhere north of 8-9 mile. If you wanna see downtown for yourself, do it in the daytime, as I always do. Last thing I'd need is my car stolen and have a 250 mile walk home! Shoot over to Canada, check out Windsor

Only place you want to avoid in the suburbs is the mall in Warren. Go to the Oakland mall in Troy if you need to even go to one. It's not bad, and its a hell of alot safer.

I have lived in Detroit my whole lif and i have never been robbed, had my car stolen or beaten up. Detroit Do have some rough areas, but what known city does not Ex: New York, LA, Chicagoand so on. But do not be scared in detroit, you are not going to get your car stolen or beaten up. the only reason people get beaten up from out of town is because they come with an attitude and judgement, that every one is bad and ghetto. So if you want to have fun come see the city, see the good and have fun
