There are limits ....but thats a good thing
The limits are there for a reason. Would you like a newspaper printing stories and calling you...a thief or a whore or a murderer....or otherwise slandering you without proof? Absolutely not. Thats why we have laws against slander and libel.
What about the old example of yelling "FIRE" in a crowded theater?
Would you like no limits on bad language in kids tv programs?
I don't think you would. BUT...these are all examples of limits being placed on freedom of speech. There is a delicate balance between absolute freedom and chaos. Sometimes the rules are not the way we like them.....and if we have a valid complaint...we can try to get the law changed....but to have no limits on freedom of speech would lead to chaos and violence.

First the government will gap us for speaking against the system. Next your neighbours may complain your speech is sensitive. Then you cannot put the name of God in vain. Even you are not encouraged to speak your mind to your children or call them names. Well, if you speak things you friends, your government, your neighbours and etc like to hear, that will be your freedom of speech. Even this forum is also governed by rules that you cannot write anything against the general feeling of people in different religions.

I would have to say YES. If we were in any other country and people talked about our president or government the way people do here in the USA they would definetely be getting in trouble. We are allowed to say whatever we really want but just like anything else you can only take things so far before people get sick of it. There's a difference in freedom of speech and freedom to be annoying.

Yes, we do. Cuba has no freedom of speech. Iraq had no freedom of speech under Saddam Hussein. There people could be executed for speaking out against the government. You don't see that happening in America, do you?
Before you get all angsty, put things in context. Just because you're free to say what you want doesn't mean you can't be held responsible for what you say.

Of course it's not an absolute right. If you really want total freedom of speech, a newspaper can print that you are a whore with absolutely no proof whatsoever and the only thing you can do is say "No I'm not".
IS that really what you want?

Why would you be limited? Can you site explicit examples? I would say that not only do we have freedom of speech, it has been expanded by the courts into freedom of expression. An example of this is today's news story of the man who tried to parachute off the empire state building: he was arrested but cleared of charges under freedom of expression.

I often think we should limit it more just b/c of all the horrible tablods that gullible people read believing all the lies about celebraties.
But then the romance novels I read might not be allowed in this country so really I don't know. Yes I do think we have freedom of speech.

Yes, we have absolute freedom of speech for any intelligent speech. The only speech limited are those that are ignorant or in poor taste (that doesn't contribute to society). Name any example of speech you feel is unfairly limited, and I can explain to you why it is ignorant or in poor taste.

As long as you're talking to yourself or the wall. If you try to speak in public like they do in England, they will arrest you here for inciting a riot.
If you work for the press and say something that some political or wealthy figure doesn't like........ then you are out of a job.
We have the freedom to speak as long as we don't say anything.

Here in the USA we truly have freedom of speech. It's guaranteed to us in the constitutional amendments.
