It is horrible that it happened and even the effects of it have not disappeared ...relevant in some of the racist answers you see here,But in order to move on you need to not let the past have that much control but look to the future and present.
For example I was watching a morning show .They showcased this Black American author . He was complaining that he feels Black athletes in current days are slaves...because they do not own any frnachises, and must abide by the owners rules.
Well white players have to abide by the same rules! They both make amazing salaries...I don't think anyone watches the Nfl and thinks negatively like this author is ....and who is to say a black american won't be owning a franchise ? I see that coming very soon ...as their is many wealthy black Americans
PS I saw an answer on your question here...this guy states that the rest of the world has gotten over it ?? That confuses me as how can a guy who is not black think it is the same ? Its easier to get over something if you have not been through it !!!! And the ones who have must let it be something to give them more reasons to overcome and surpass
then another answer stated to get over it and stop being mad at white people for things that never happened??Slavery ? the kkk which their is still many in the back woods? in the 50's with little rock and segregation of schools!! Those who say that need to get over their guilt of ancestors showing no humanity .
No I am not african /black american but I grew up and was raised to judge people on an equal bases and anytime I hear prejudice /racism on anyone by any race it makes me ill

Iraq does not exist historically. It was created by the British drawing lines on a map that crossed traditional borders and grouped together people who didn't want to be together.
In the same way, people in Africa would have been fine if the Europeans hadn't come along and willingly bought the slaves the African kings were willing to sell. (In many west African nations before the 18th century, the punishment for criminals was slavery.) But the Europeans and yanks became addicted to it and started kidnapping and warring when they couldn't buy enough.

Yes, people who are born in a country today have to take responsibility for their actions and live where they are, but that doesn't mean the country which kidnapped and enslaved their ancestors shouldn't try the "We've moved on" crap that Chicken George says about Iraq.
Admitting mistakes by past governments would be enough; not everybody's a whore looking to cash in. They're black people, not Halliburton. What they want is an admission that slavery was wrong and that the US was built on it, nothing more.

Of course, slavery is still relevant to the Black Community. It is part of our history and it represents a significant part of the history of this country.
The problem with America, Americans, we often and so quickly forget the lessons of the previous generations. The Iraq war is a case in point (remember Vietnam?).
It is important that we maintain "cultural knowledge". What our forefathers learned about overcoming oppression may prevent us from becoming oppressors. At the very least, we should be proud of their accomplishments.
For those who think it was so-o-o long ago.... the Jewish culture still celebrate the leadership of Moses who lead them out of Egypt and to freedom when the paint was still wet on the pyramids.

Yes....it is HIGHLY relevant. There are many places in the world, almost all of which are in islamic or marxist countries where blacks live as actual slaves. Forced to work at degrading jobs, beaten if they complain or don't obey meticulously, killed on a whim. Under the circumstances, no black person should tolerate either islam or marxism. Unfortunately, BOTH of these are very popular with american blacks. That is simply not in their self interest. Few even know what is going on. Nor are they aware that their leaders and so called advocates are involved in this. For example, that madman Farrakhan, routinely visits and accepts money from, some of the countries that are the worst offenders.

I think everyone should just get over it. There is not one person in this country whom has ever been a slave or owned a slave and there hasn't been anyone alive who was or did for about a hundred years. I dont think it should have ever been legal in the first place and do not think we as a civilized nation will stand for that kind of human rights violation ever again. Its time to concentrate on where we are going and not where we have been as a people. The past is a nice place to visit but not a nice place to live. The truth is that all races and ethnic groups have experienced some form of oppression or slavery I do not see any other group whining over the plight of their ancestors do you?
Yeah we all should just get over it and get on with the business of improving this country and the world to make it a safer and better place for our children.

Slavery continues to be proper. you could't only 'get better from it' yet you could study from it. regrettably after the move in the 70s it kind of feels the subsequent technology has dropped the ball in gaining understanding of from what ancestors persisted. the unique plan once Black's escaped segregation and slavery became to break loose and in no way ascertain back. Slavery ought to were portion of the previous besides the undeniable fact that it truly is no longer. Now, there is slavery between the community both mentally and bodily. besides the undeniable fact that, all the slavery isn't gained from the 'different races'. in the black community there's a clean type of slavery happening. it truly is a 'black on black' slavery happening. Being a 'thug' or a'hood rat' should not be a popularity of pride - yet many settle for, brag and boast the call like its the perfect ingredient for the reason that sliced bread. we've celebs mountain climbing the charts as they feed us pictures of life laced with sex, drugs, alcohol and violence. We watch awards shows to confirm who's strolling with the tatas out and who's going to have 'pink meat' with whom. Then we ask your self why AIDS/HIV is the great killer between youthful African American women folk on the prompt. we are executing our ownselves and performance our names on the docket as our own slavemasters. We begged for the right to be dealt with equivalent - and now that we've it...we are bumping ourselves right down to 'hustlers','pimps' and babymama's - it only doesn't make experience. i understand even as the ancestors fought for freedom and equality -this can't were what that they had in recommendations. it truly is going to likely be puzzling for Blacks to succeed in the equivalent status of the dominant race. And sure I do have self assurance problems with the previous many times play into movements of the present and destiny. yet quite - how do we anticipate the dominant race to seem at us both and acceptably if we are endorsing unacceptable habit by those in the customary public eye. And after I say endorsing I mean - operating to the save to purchase the hot 50 Cent cd or reciting Lil Kim lyrics as we stand in the lunchroom of our company workplace. at present - we are growing our own slavery in the community...yet we do not opt for to open our eyes and adjust it.

Yes, though there are some things proven that show slavery has set us back a few years...its technically not us. It was the ones before us. There havent been any slaves in decades, so why use that as a crutch?....This all just gives us a reason to work harder for what we want....slavery has nothing to do with it....get over it

No, it is not. if you are blaming "the plight of the blk man" on slavery/whites, how do you explain the plight of the blk man in africa? If you consider how blks were living in africa prior to whites arriving on the continent, there is no evidence to suggest that things would be any different today, or that if whites never traded for slaves, things would be different, because slavery is all blks have ever known. The blks of africa closely parallel the success/failure of blks in america, there is no evidence that suggest that we should expect american born blks to perform any differently than afican blks.
I think blks use the slavery issue as a crutch, they use it as an excuse to explain the disparity between blks and whites, rather than examining their own shortcomings

I dont think we should forget about it but I DO think people should get over it. It was not YOU yourself who was a slave and it was not I who did those horrible things to your ancestors. Black people need excuses about it today to get what they want. Who set the Slaves free? A white man. Not all white people are racist. There are just as many racist whites as there are racists blacks.
And remeber this...it was your ancestor Africans who sold thier own people as slaves.

NO we should not get over it
THE PAST EFFECT THE FUTURE.
every rational thinking person knows this.
whites culture in America was shaped by life liberty and the per suit of happiness
blacks culture in America was shaped by hateful evil people.
we are a young culture trying to assimilate into a culture that caused us so much pain.
if your dad raped my mom 20 years ago, but he never suffered any consequence.
he had also made a sex tape about it and sold it for millions.
now at the time, my mom had no rights. but today she does.
you mean to tell me she should get over it.
you must be crazy.
