That Thing You Do! is a 1996 film, written and directed by Tom Hanks. The movie tells the story of a fictional one-hit wonder rock band from Erie, Pennsylvania.

The "Oneders" was based on a compilation of one hit wonders that had a hit, went on tour, and fell apart. But the band itself was not representative of any one group.
