Does a dimmer switch cause less electrictiy to be used than a normal on/off switch?

Yes it does if you don't have it on full bright. Did you know that SCR dimmers play havvock on light bulbs. Get one with a varac in it. It gives better control, longer bulb life, and little RFI.

Yes it should. It all depends on how "Bright" you have the light. The brighter you have it, the more electricity it will use. Turn it down low and it will use less electricity.
