Opening an account in someone else's name is fraud, unless you have a power of attorney for them. If you need to send him money, wire it to him via Western Union. Or you could send him a link to an online bank, ask him to set it up and give you the account details and then you can deposit into his account.

*** Someone below recommended ingdirect.com. I have also banked there for several years, but keep in mind that it is still fraud to open an account in someone else's name - even your husband's, and if caught you could face felony charges.

We'll there is one thing I know for a fact if he opens a bank account and he his a primary and you are just a secondary he can block or take all the money out and u can't do anything about it. My ex husband blocked me from my account and took all the money and there wasn't anything I could do about it. The other part I'm not sure about, but I do know like when we have our federal tax direct deposited he would of been able to just take those to from me. But you need to talk to a lawyer, and maybe a judge might order him to give some of it back. But I just don't know. Sorry! You might try going to Legal Aide to get a free lawyer. I would also ask for alimony, for him to keep you on his health insurance, also take him for half his 401 k (retirement) you will need this to get on your feet. In the mean time call child support recovery. This process takes awhile, so do it right away. If you don't have any money coming into the home, go to DHS and get food stamps, and they will tell u of other options to help you also including medicaid. Hope this helps some.

It's possible that a bank might do this if you can get him to send you a signed document with his information on it and a statement that he is OK with being added as a signer to an account. The account will primarily be in your name, your husband would be an additional signer.

I found one bank that seemed to suggest that it would do this.

Meanwhile, have you considered getting the check cashed at a checking cashing joint and then sending him money via Western Union? This would probably be more useful and faster than an online account (how will he withdraw from an online US bank account while in Mexico?) Most check cashing joints have lower fees for government checks compared to regular and payroll checks.

I have been banking here for some time. It takes a few days to get the initial account open and ready to go but it's a good bank.

If you have a bank account, he can go to any bank over there and the bank certifies the deposit with his signature in fax.
Then your bank can cash his check and also transfer money to him over there. But you need to have a bank account to do this in your name obviously.

Because I did it before.

No, you cant open an account for him. You could mail him the check and have him sign it over to you, and mail it back....but this doesn't always work.

If he's near a large city, you might be able to mail him the check and have him cash it-- not sure if some banks honor out of country checks?

You can't open it in his name. He will have to send you a Power of Attorney so you can sign for him.
