Depends. How old is your sister? If she's your age, its mostly what will happen if that condom breaks and less emphasis on psychological damage.

You do know about inbreeding and birth defects, don't you? Suppose you have a gene for tay-sachs, which takes two copies of the broken version to kill you. A random unrelated person will almost certainly not have the gene, and you won't have to worry about your children with them very much. Vice versa too; they may have a gene for cystic fibrosis, and the children might have both one cystic fibrosis gene and one tay-sachs gene, but they effect different things and one bad copy won't stop either process.

Your sister is much more likely to be a carrier for the same set of problems. If you get her pregnant, the child will be at a high risk for getting two copies of a damaging recessive gene. Oh, maybe nothing will go visibly wrong, but be warned that you are playing Russian roulette with the next generation. Which is why just about every culture on the planet has a taboo against this.

It's forbidden only because that's how it's always been.

There is a reason to it, however. When family members mate, especially immediate family like siblings, they are very likely to pass on genetic defects to their offspring. Because you are related, your genes are very similar and therefore there is a high possibly that your children will possess a genetic disorder that is recessive, so it usually would not show up.

However, if you do use protection and are not going to have kids, it's your choice.

The best thing to do would be to find the qualities you like best about your sister, and to look for those same qualities in someone you're not related to.

Good luck!

Maybe people have just learned through time that it's better if you marry (have sex and children) someone with a further DNA design than you... Because in ancient times, this is not a taboo.
- Sarah is Abraham's half-sister
- Rebekah is Isaac's cousin
- Rachel and Leah are Jacob's cousins

But as modern medicine advances and we studied genetics, a lot has been "discovered" about this. In the royal oline of Queen Victoria, the hemophilia gene was passed on to many generations because they intermarried close relatives.

This really is more of a precaution, that evolved into a taboo after a while.

The main reason as far as I know is that if there are faulty genes within a family then a child will have even bigger problems. But having said that, people do have incest can have children without problems, as mentioned earlier though the risk of a problem is increased!

Pedigree dogs which are bred within the same family typically have more problems than mongrels for instance.

Just posted and then read the above answer. It is very well put, better than I have!

It is because rare genetic malfunctions (often caused by recessive traits) are more likely when close relatives interbreed. This is because these rare recessive genes can be covered up by their dominant counterpart, which will almost certainly be donated by an unrelated partner, since any given "bad" gene is rare in the first place. On the other hand, because of heredity, it is more likely for a close relative to be carrying the same "bad" genes as you, and if that is the case, the pairing of the two recessive traits will be exposed in your offspring, resulting in what is known as birth defects. Thus incest is prohibited in order to minimize the number of babies born with debilitating birth defects.

Well, legally, the government can make laws that restrict behavior. For example laws against bigamy or suicide. And the other stuff is driven by religion and rules and taboos that come from the prehistory. Funny thing is that even without explicitly being told that is "wrong," most brothers and sisters have a natural aversion for each other when it comes to sexual feelings.

Abstain from all appearance of evil. The Bible or God calls it confussion. Or satanic. You want to fill up with sin go that way.
God can get you out of it if you turn from it to Him. But know this that if you continue in it it will destroy you and your sister. Be sure your sin will find you out.
God wouldn't tell you not to do something if it were not important.
He tells you because He loves you and wants what is best for you and others. The Bible even teaches to run I mean run from this kind of sin. It is bad.

Relationships with family are important, and sex makes a total change in a relationship. You can have sex with plenty of people in the world, but your relationship with your siblings is unique. Highy inadvisable.

The solution is retroactive birth control. And why, pray tell, did you feel the need to post this to the LGBT board?
