To answer your question the single.However little known fact that Dave Thomas got his idea for his hamburger from another restaurant in NW Ohio.This place still exists. It's called Wilson's Hamburgers.So maybe it could be said that a Wilson's burger was the launching of the Wendy's single or so it is rumored.

Wendy's first menu items that were sandwiches were the single, double, triple, and the junior bacon. The rest of the menu items came later and are sometimes modified. They have left the recipe for the orifional sandwiches alone however.
