In some cities streets go in one direction and avenues go in the perpendicular direction. Courts end in a cul-de-sac. Boulevards generally have a median in the middle, with grass and trees. Lanes are generally streets just outside of town -- more rural.

Those are the traditional uses. Now days, it doesn't matter. Streets are named whatever sounds good.

Road = Rural (usually two lane)
Street = City
Boulevard = Main road connecting two adjoining towns or cities.
Court = short road with no thru traffic.and large area for turn around.

There are other reasons, but I don't care to go into ALL the reasoning.
