Just a bit of correction to Karin C's answer: according to Oxford English Dictionary (OED), a sow is an adult female pig; a gilt is a young female pig.

(OED notes that the exact meaning of "gilt" differs from place to place. Some say it means a young female pig; some say "before she has had her first little; some say "before she has had her second litter.)
