Good question! I was just pondering this the other day myself. We should be N. Americans, they should be S. Americans...

I don't why. I have never called someone born in Chile, Brazil, or whatever by some continent reference. If you were born in Brazil and are a Brazilian citizen then you are a Brazilian. If you were born in Chile then you are a Chilean. Makes since to me. If I am a citizen of Russia then I am a Russian. People and their terms I suppose. Who knows?

America, the United States, is its own country and thats why we are called Americans. Other wise we would be referred to by state, i.e., Kentuckian, Nebraskan, etc. Just one of those things I guess.

The country's FULL name is The United States of AMERICA!!!!!!

I can see asking if its name was United States but America is in the friggin' name so they are AMERICANS!!!

Now, if it were Brazil America or Chile America I could see the argument.

When you speak of a person's nationality, you are referring to the country they are born in. Thus, people born in the USA are Americans. When you refer to people living in north, central or south America, you are referring to a geographic region. That would be more of a broader category, like European or African.

I understand your point, but it is because American is refering to our nationality. Our nation just happens to share the name of our continent. I do wonder about Asia though, since it seems everyone on that continent is refered to as Asian, even though their nationality differs....Chinese, Japanese, etc.

Because they called their country the United States of America. The "Americas" include North and South and Central. There are no "united" states in South America, there are lots of countries.

It's just a quirk of history. Don't soil your panties over it.

Because to call somebody a thick United States of American would take too much time.
