I have this strange noise coming from my computer. It sounds a lot like a chirping cricket. It's a brand new Compac Presario. The thing is.....my old computer, a Dell, made the same noise. I thought at first that the kids must have downloaded a nature type of theme but I checked. NO nature anything. What could this noise be and how can I get rid of it?

If it is a brand new computer I would take it to the store you bought it from and have them look at it. It will still be under warranty. If it is coming from the computer itself and not the speakers, it is most likely a bad fan that needs to be replaced.

UPDATE::::

I was installing several new machines today and after answering this question I noticed a sound like you described coming from the optical drive (CD) when I was installing software. It was the sound of the laser moving back and forth reading the disk. Do you hear the sound all the time, or is it when you have a disc in the CD/DVD drive? If it is the CD/DVD drive making the noise it is probably nothing to be worried about.

If this is your brand new computer and its coming from the case, I would recommend taking it back. Although some hard drives just make a bit of noise, hard drives that are getting ready to die make a noise when the head is having a difficult time moving across the platters within the hard drive. They both sound sort of like a cricket, and its a hard problem to diagnose by descriptions of sounds. =/

If its coming from the speakers, I would have no idea besides different sounds that you can put into mouse clicks or a program running in the background that was put there to distract you. If it is coming from the case, it could very well be the fan is squeaky in which case a little bit of oil would do the trick very well.
