I live in NY just outside the city. We get moderate snowfall(just not this year). I have a long driveway, and NEED it cleared. Do I need a 2 stage or will one stage handle it. And has anyone had experience with a pull start snow thrower, I can get a new 5.5hp 2 stage for $500 w/o electric start, or a 7HP one stage w/ elec start for $350. Any opinions?

I would recommend a two stage. They will handle more snow and be able to throw it farther than a single stage. Most two stage snowthrowers also have a self propell system that is driven by the wheels. Most single stage self propell models are driven by the auger. If the snowthrower is working properly, you should have no problem starting it without an electric starter. Keep this in mind. If the snowthower stalls at the end of a long drive way, you have no electric cord to plug the unit into. Most models do not carry an onboard battery, they must be pluged into an electric outlet to use the electric starter.

I have never had problems starting either my 2 stage or single stage snow throwers. They both have primer bulbs which helps. one or two pulls and they start. The single stage snow thrower I use 90% of the time. It's light and very maneuverable. The only problem with it is at the end of the drive where the city blows go by.

I would always go with 2 stage. It will go threw the snow 10x better. and clog less. which means you get to keep all your fingers. Ebau has them really cheap and they deliver. Here's a direct link

I am quite happy with mine. I would never go back to the single stage. I live in Garden City.
