I really love all the previous 24 series and have not had cable until this year; excited that I would be able to watch the new 24. Only to think it was really gorey and not very suspenceful...just not as great as before. What do you think? I quit watching the second night. Did it improve?

Well, define improve... Jack killed Curtis to defend a known murdering terrorist, and 30 seconds later the guy's former followers set off a nuclear bomb in LA...
I think they have reached a point (and I love the show, but!) where they are going for shock value over story line and character development. Too bad, it was a great show.

In my opinion it was not a horror but something that can very well happen at anytime in this country, I only wish we had a real Jack Bauer to try and save the day! I think that the first 4 hours of this season are the best yet and it will only get better!!

I think it got a little "campy" with the nuke and all, but I think they had to build the actual plot line with that. Just keep watching.
As for being gory, it is playing into who he's become from his time in captivity.
