"Pretty is as Pretty does" means that your actions, and not your looks, determine how attractive you are to others.
A person who is nice looking but mean and nasty is not "pretty" to look at or be around. A person who is kind and gentle and caring, is a very "pretty" person indeed.

I used to wonder what that meant because I heard pretty is as pretty does but ugly is clear to the bone. Well, as I got older, I realized that some people that I did not consider attractive before I knew them became very attractive once I got to know them because of their personality. AND I have met a couple of VERY attractive people that once I knew them, had no attraction for me whatsoever because of the way the act and treat others.
Short version: Pretty is how you treat others and not how you look.

it pretty much means that its whats inside that counts. if your good on the inside it will shine through. what you do determines who you are not what you look like. i think its true to some extent, but i still think people judge by whats on the outside too much.

She always said it when we weren't behaving in a "ladylike fashion"!
(Whatever that is supposed to mean). You can't be pretty if you don't act nice and polite!!! lol I wouldn't say it to my daughter. It seems sexist to me now.
