Good question !
Salt allows water to get below freezing, without freezing.
The Sun allow the snow to melt.As it drips thru the snow below it.
it gets cold enough to freeze and form ice on the Road .
By scattering rock salt, you lower the temperature water has to be to freeze.
Get 2 cups of snow. Fill 1 cup the rest of the way with plain water
Add a table spoon of salt to a cup of water & fill the other cup of snow with that.
The cup with plain water will be 32 degrees fahenhite.
The cup with salt added will be around 28
Cool huh?

The chemical bonds exchange ions. Think of it this way, when you eat too much salt, what happens? You retain fluids, right? It is because of the way water connects with the sodium. It is basically the same way when you throw salt out there on a frozen sidewalk, the chemistry working to connect the valents actually creates an action, generating the tiniest heat, and the bond between ice and salt actually melts it.

i basically ments into the ice and since salt water has a lower freezing temperature it thaws out the ice, not by heating the water but rather changing the freezing temp,
