This just came to me from my travel agent: The new deadline to have a passport for LAND BORDER CROSSING and SEA TRAVEL is June 1, 2009, though Congress left itself lots of wiggle room and could actually move the deadline up under some circumstances, to early 2008. The deadline for AIR TRAVEL remained the same--January 8, 2007.
You will need your birth certificate and drivers license though. ;)

If you are flying or going by ship,They need to have passports as soon as next week. Even Babies! When you drive across the border(in 2007) you need to have just their birth certificates with you. (keep copies with you and only hand over copies to officials unless they ask for the original...you don't want to loose the original) If you aren't traveling with both parents, you need to have authorization from the missing parent to take them into Mexico. (There is a form at Auto Club or your travel agent should have it) It needs to be notarized by the missing parent.
