Writing a story?

I've written something akin to a novella, and I need someone to edit/proofread, etc. Any suggestions on who? I'd rather not have my mother, say, do it.

A friend or a teacher maybe? Anybody you feel would be fair and give you good feedback and constructive criticism.

run sections of it through a spell checker program
It'll nail those real bad errors, for sure.

Ask a friend to read a chapter or two...short ones that they can read in say under an hour.
