I own or have owned:
- iPod, 3rd generation 40Gig
- iPod Nano, 1st generation, 2Gig
- Sansa e-280, 8Gig
- Creative Zen (I no longer recall the specs)
iPods are well-thought out devices that carefully meet the goals of Apple, the music industry, and users.
Biggest weakness: Battery is not easily user-replaceable.
Biggest strength: HUGE base of accessories,e tc.
Sansa e-200 series gets good reviews as an 'iPod killer' and is indeed a very nice device. It includes a radio and voice recordings- which iPod's research indicated few people use- and that is indeed true in my case.
Biggest weaknesses:
- Few accessories available
- Cannot easily handle playlists
- Cannot handle AAC music (iTunes default format)
Biggest strengths:
- Replaceable battery
- Cheaper
- Voice recording, FM radio
- Plays nicer with WMA and other formats, programs
A good site to try is http://www.anythingbutipods.com for non-iPod devices and http://www.ilounge.com for iPods.
(iLounge also has a forum for free legal music!)

iPods, while they are very easy to use and have an excellent interface with iTunes, have become quite a fashion statement. There are other products on the market that perform as well as an iPod, but don't have the same great interface. I would say that it boils down to how much someone likes the way it looks and feels in the palm of your hand. I say iPods are awesome!

I haven't tried Sansa, but I have to say the sound quality on my IPod seriously outweighs that of the Zen player I have.

Yes. They use higher quality parts (hence the high price - you get what you pay for) compared to the other manufacturers, they are very easy to interface with a computer, they are small and very portable with a number of capabilities. The sound quality is very good, and it supports some array of formats (including wav and aiff).
Plus their device support is excellent with a huge amount of things compatible with it. Almost 70% of cars coming out this year (2007) will actually be built with iPod ports and compatibility.

I like my iPod. I've had other mp3 players that were pretty crappy. But I've also had others that were pretty nice. However, the good thing about iPod is that if something happens to it within the first year, they will fix it or replace it. I just recently had this happen (mine frozen because of a shot hard drive). When I took it to Apple, he tried to fix it. When he realized that it was going to take too long, he handed me another one. No questions asked as to what happened to it.

I personally prefer the iPod over anything else due to its extreme ease of use and functionality. Its correspondence with iTunes is more streamlined than any other product on the market. It also has a plethora of accessories to adjust your listening experience to your preference, whether it be cases, speaker sets, or if you're going to Japan anytime soon, a toilet paper roll with speakers.. haha.
