4 times the blind isn`t enough like when i start a tournament the blinds are 10/20 i raise 4 times 80 and everyone will call that 4 times the blind doesn`t make a diffrence on getting players out of the hand idiots will call any bet with anything do you know how to raise that will get a lot people out of the hand besides raising 4 times the blinds or 3 times the blind because idiots just keep calling everything and there are still too much people in the pot?

It depends on the level of people you play against.

You don't want to throw out too much pre-flop and have someone hit a flop, but you want to keep the number of players down.

Gotta play it by ear.

It depends on the blind sizes vs. stack sizes. Basically, you need to learn about M value. For a standard hold 'em game, M= your stack / (small blind + big blind). With large M values, a raise of 3 to 4 times the big blind may not be enough because you are offerring your opponents good "implied" odds. These are difficult concepts to master, so pick up a good book by Phil Gordon, David Sklansky, or Dan Harrington.

3 to 4 times the big blind it's a standard raise, It's a good play. Now, you must talk about freerolls or very small buy-in, So yes everybody is reckless and play there hands like maniacs. Depending on the games, you need to adapt yourself. You talk about a 80 raise so that the biginning of the tournament, everybody with any connectors want to see a flop, It's cheap. Poker is tough!

If you're playing against people who will see a flop thinking "any two will do" then you're gonna get called here 99% of the time unless you raise a ridiculous amount of money pre-flop. Best idea is to play premium hands when you raise and hope you get a good hand by the end, this way you can just let them feed your chip stack by making stupid calls pre-flop and after the flop.

It all depends on the level of the other players. I don't like to make very sofisticated plays or large raises early in a tournament because there are always idiots who call anything with what ever crap they hold.
