I say AMEN to this! Only a 100 years or so, Americans routinely saw the distinction between themselves and the state (or the gov). Thus, one wouldn't be falsely ridiculed as being unpatriotic if you something bad against the state. It's ok to dislike the state, but love the country and it's people, places, and things. There's a big difference.

It should be both. The people should elect legislators, who are hopefully ot corrupt. However, politicians are also more informed on the issues than their constituents, because that is their job. So, there has to be a balance between public approval and what it right, since both may not be the same thing.

People ellect those they want. Usually they do a good job at digging up each others past, so any votes for them is your own fault if you regret it later. I suppose you could also blame the media for only highlighting big name "celebrity" polititions and not getting the names out of lesser-known guys/gals.
You must also understand that as a Democracy does not mean you (as a citezen) control the government. It means you vote in somebody to control it.

It is the people and like the US we elect them. But that does not mean we get the representation that we want. Many times our elected officials head off to Washington with their own interest in hand and not ours. The problem; money corrupts. A possible solution is a cut in pay and term limits.

Both, the government is an instrument of the people to help them define their country.

A country is it's people. The individuals we elect are supposed to represent our interests and beliefs, and thus be a reflection of us.

Both. The people brought the government into power, even a dictatorial government. If they think their government is bad, they try to get rid of it.

I would have to say "yes." A country is both its people and its government. However, it is also its culture, economy, land, and everything else within its borders.

A country should be judged by its people and culture (or cultures), not a group of elitists that are elected (or not).

i don't ever want america to be judged by it's politicians, who i think are the very lowest class of american.
but i'm not too worried, america is simply too vast to be judged by a few fat, balding, middle to old aged white guys who think they own the world...
