In my population studies class, my teacher just assigned us to pick one country in Africa that represents Africa as a whole and then conduct a number of statistical and and demographic analyses on it.

Now, I think this assignment is a little...odd...since no one country can adequately represent an entire continent, but that's what I've been assigned to do, so I'd like to hear other people's views on it.

So which country in Africa has people in it that best represent the average African as a whole?

I don't think there's a country in Africa that could represent the continent. Each country is very much different from the other. And within one country there's a great diversity too interms of language and all that.

So yes, that's a very odd question.

I'm from Zambia originally... So i would have to say Zambia. Most Typically African... That does sound odd...I believe that All African countries are a good representation of their own culture and.... Yes.. They all Represent what an African nation is. The people... The beliefs.. Their own individual Tribes and Languages. BUT.. Like i said...Although i have visited many African countries... Even though i Was born and Grew Up there.... I was always.... and still am Proud of my country. As a people...We represent our Country to the fullest and our Proud people...( Just like everybody else is Proud of their own County)... I think Zambia is a great Representation......So Yeah I Think you should research Zambia.Lol.

At a guess I would say somewhere like Botswana or even Zambia -Botswana because it is the fastest growing country in Africa which is rich in minerals, and has a lot of potnetial, but unvortunately is suffering hugely with HIV. Zambia or Zim would be good to study as Zim was the bread basket of southern africa until mugabe got his hands on it and stripped it of all its assets -the rise and fall through corruption and short sightedness -live for today and do not worry about tomorrow. Depends of what aspect do you want to study -animals -then botswana corruption zim and nigeria, music south africa -i htink you need to choose somehting to focus on and work out your answer from there - you have tribes -bushmen, hottentots, zulu......

What exactly is "Typically African"? Your teacher is obviously stereotyping, one African country can not represent all of Africa. Africa is EXTREMELY diverse in it's languages, tribal and ethnic groups, climate, and people in general.

I have a degree in African studies and I have no idea what your teacher is asking. Ask him or her to define "typically African". You might get a better clue and maybe even get some brownie points for asking for clarification of a vague question.
