Namaste! It looks like, in general, Indians have a very poor opinion of belly dance. I've even read in blogs about demonstrations against it.

Why do you think is the reason for that? I know you have beautiful sacred dances, but this is different.

Bely Dance per se is a fine art.
However belly dance done by a girl from a very financially disadvantaged background with absolutely no idea how to perform it and no training whatsoever, dancing in front of a smoke filled bar room filled with leering drunken men, is where Indians get their idea of Belly dance.
You get the picture? Thats why the opinion is poor. Thats also the reason why the Dance Bars in Mumbai were banned.
The girls, most of them illiterate who earned more money than senior Managers in large companies protested. The Government did not back off. They put their foot down. And enforced the ban.
Once these girls get the greed for money there is a very thin line that stops them from performing other acts with the above mentioned patrons to increase their income.
Yes like I said as an Art form Belly Dance is fine. India has many forms of Dance by way of Art.

WE are all individuals and it shows.

Belly dance, it is a rear event even in most open minded country like USA.

Some Rajasthani videos do have belly dance type moves and costumes, and people enjoy them, the music is Rajasthani. May be the people are just not use to the middle eastern music.

Some of the Bollywood stuff has belly dance type moves and even costumes so it may be the music that people have not caught on.

Most Indians understand Hindi and Urdu but they do not enjoy Arabic as they do not know that language, both Hindi and Urdu have some Arabic words common to them, but still to enjoy people have to understand enough.

The benefits of belly dance are both mental and physical. Dancing provides a good cardio-vascular workout and helps increase both flexibility and strength, focusing on the torso or "core muscles", although it also builds leg strength. Many belly dance styles emphasize muscular "isolations", teaching the ability to move various muscles or muscle groups independently. Veil work can also build arm, shoulder, and general upper-body strength, and playing the zils can build strength and independence of the fingers. Belly dance is suitable for all ages and body types, and can be as physical as the participant chooses. As with starting any new exercise routine, people would be wise to consult their doctor before starting a belly dance regimen and to talk with the belly dance instructor to find out the level of difficulty in the classes. (Of course, the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle outweigh those of an active one.) For many belly dancers, the practice offers mental health benefits including an improved sense of well-being, better body image and self-esteem, and the generally positive outlook that comes with regular, enjoyable exercise.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the practice of belly dancing may benefit women preparing for childbirth, as the movements strengthen and tone the pelvic floor muscles and the woman becomes more familiar with the way her muscles work. The hip-circling movements used in the dance may relieve some of the common discomforts of labor.

Besides being an art form, belly dancing has been adapted as a health program. Since it gives a complete cardiovascular workout and strengthens the abdominal muscles, it is gaining popularity among men and women who want to lose weight. An intense sixty-minute session may burn around 330 calories. Since one focus of belly dancing is to gain strength and flexibility in the abdomen, the dance form is said to be one of the quickest ways to achieve firmness and reduce the paunch..

Any entertainment , in its pure form is just that. The objections came when secondary activities at the Dance halls and around them became objectionable. Don't be surprised if deeper probe shows that some of the hypoccrats who held the demonstrations were those who were denied bribes or silence money by the crooks.
