It means that the image only has a measurement in 2 dimensions (2D)......width & height. For example, any picture you can see on your computer screen is 2D, as you can measure how tall & wide it is.

3D means it is measurable in 3 dimensions....width, height & depth. For example, anything you can see & hold, as you can measure its height, width & depth.

Take as a further example, the avatars on Yahoo Answers...the little side profiles of heads are 2 D as you dont know how "thick" that head actually is.....if it were 3D, you would know the exact shape of the head.

It is a image that only has 2 dimensions. Its like just drawing a square as a opposed to a 1 dimensional line or a 3 dimensional cube.

2D = two dimentional i.e. up & down and left & right. 3D has the extra dimension of forwards & backwards also
