Maybe this is a stupid question, as this is not my field, but does anyone have a theory or suggestions about what happened before the big bang.
just ideas, no need to be true...

The small bang...

Now, really, some oriental philosophies believe that a universe is born everytime a god goes to sleep and starts dreaming and disappears when the god wakes up. Then, when he goes to sleep again, another universe is created. Thus, the universe would be a god's dream. Interesting...
But what was scientifically there before the Big Bang? Energy. Incredibly highly concentrated energy.

There are a lot of theories but I believe that nothing existed before the Big Bang. That is unless our universe dies from a heat death. If it does, then a Big Crunch will occur and another Big Bang will happen afterwards. And if this is true, I doubt this was the first Big Bang. Unfortunately, mankind will never know the answer to this question because of all the possibilities.

Since the Big Bang was the beginning of all matter, space, and time in our universe...there was nothing before the Big Bang of our universe.

There is a lot of speculation -- our universe's Big Bang was the result of a "big crunch" from another universe, our universe's Big Bang resulted from the collision of two "membranes" in extra dimensions of other universes...but that is all PURE speculation. We don't know now if there was anything before, and we may never know, since if there was anything it was outside our space-time.

It really is unknown. We're having a hard enough time going back the 14 billion years or so to the start of the Big Bang and knowing things! We may someday find out, or we may not...but it won't be anytime soon :)

There's a very tiny hole in the "center" of the Universe. This hole is not a 2 dimensional hole, like in a wall. But rather at least 4-dimensional. This hole is connected to the "outside" of the Universe. The otherside is very highly pressurized/energized. All matter that we see in this Universe was leaked/is leaking from that side. Matter is spewed out, therefore some of us think that it was an explosion, but really it wasn't. Before the "hole" formed, our "Universe" was all but vacuum with 0 pressure. The other side was all matter with no vaccuum and highly energized/pressurized. Technically we are part of both worlds since matter came from that side.
We are just mere bi-products of a cosmic bowel movement. I call this the Big Dung Theory.

Nothing existed before the big bang. Not this Universe anyway. No one knows what was here before the Universe

There was no thought " what was there before the big bang ". Some things aren't meant to talk about. I mean why are the sun yellow, why not blue ? Sometimes we just have to let the stream float. Have a nice day ;)

Do you remember anything before you were born? Obviously, you don't. No one does. This emptyness is what existed before the big bang.

Since no one has family photos of it and since any theory is purely speculative, there's really no answer to your question.
