I've seen 2 different houses with these mailboxes on really long poles extending up into the air and on the mailbox it says "Air Mail." They also have regular mailboxes next to them. Why do these people have these in their yards?

Ummmm... these people are nuts... that would be the best explanation... or they are really trying to make the news as a funny story... air mail has nothing really to do with home delivery unless of course, your mail is dropped from an airplane. This is usually saved for those living in Antarctica (or the like) and deliveries are once every 3 months...
Even though the USAF is the best trained group of flyers in the world, there is no way any of them could get mail into a box in the air... unless they shot it from a canon... and then the mail would be ruined... this would negate the need for delivering it as they would realize it was ruined... then they would ask for another assignment that made more sense and actually accomplished something other than shooting at mailboxes and ruining mail... which of course is a crime in itself... but anyway....
