Thanks
Im trying to decide what to get
I found a 20 gallon at the local fish store with all access exept for a lid, for 50 bucks, and I know I would get a diff heater to keep on hand cause ive had heater malfuntions that killed fish
So which do you think would be better
the kit that is 50 bucks and i would also need to buy a lid and heater
or the wal mart one that I would need a heater and air pump

You may be able to find one on sale for 40$. Typically they range from 40-80$ (different brands have different prices).
A 50 gallon tank kit at walmart is about 150$ on sale, 180$ usual.
And so on.

If you're looking for great prices, try http://www.craigslist.com - prices for used merchandise can be about half of the store price.

Edit: Definitely get something with a hood/lid. It'll cost you more to buy a new hood.

Which ever one you get make sure the lid comes with it, that is usually the most expensive part to buy. I had to buy one when I got a 20 long for free and the hood cost around $30. So if you get the one from the local pet store for $50 it will really cost around $80 after you get the hood and even more if you replace the heater. If you buy a kit from Walmart, or where ever, you get the tank, hood, filter, sometimes a heater and sometimes you even get some food and water conditioner. Just add up how much money you will need to spend to get it how you want it from both places and see which one will be cheaper in the end.

You would be best of to get a boxed set of everything you will need to get started. Not just the tank. I would go to a PetCo or a PetSmart. The larger the tank, the better. I would start with nothing smaller than a 28 to 35 gallon tank. You should set up the filter, heater, tank top, and the chemicals that come with the kit to start out the water correctly .. and rocks of course. If you put your fish in the first or 2nd day .. most of them will probably die. You should just let everything run, including the filter .. and have the rocks in .. for at least 4 to 7 days before you put the fish in. Talk to someone at the store you purchase the fish at as to which fish to start with .. AND .. HOW to first place the fish in the tank. If you add them to the tank incorrectly, they may die from shock. I have a 55 gallon tank and, personally, would not go with anything smaller. Naturally, you need a solid, strong base that can safely hold your tank. Each gallon of water equals approx. 8 pds. So a 20 gallon tank will be approx. 200 pounds. (Rounding up the number due to the weight of the rocks .. etc.) Good Luck ! :)
PS: The rule of thumb is one gallon of water per one inch of fish, ( NOT per fish). If you end up with a 20 gallon, I would have no more than 8 or 9 small fish in it. ALSO, if you plan on having a Goldfish in it .. you need 4 gallons of water per inch of Goldfish .. they are very dirty fish. I strongly recommend not buying at Walmart .. go to PetSmart or PetCo as they have staff that are knowledgable, and getting a boxed kit is cheaper over-all. :)

the 29 is about 100 and comes with the same stuff.

They usually run about 35 to 40 dollars. Just don't get your fish the same day, you want to get the tank up and running at least 24 hrs before adding the fish.
