WAGs (or Wags) was an acronym used particularly (but by no means exclusively) by the British tabloid press to describe the Wives And Girlfriends of the England national football team. It came into common use during the 2006 World Cup, held in Germany, although it had been used occasionally before that.

A 'wag' is a character who is always cracking jokes etc and raising a smile on peoples faces. Hence the expression, "He's a bit of a wag".

A wag to my understanding is when something moves left to right; a dogs tail is a good example.

stands for Wives And Girlfriends. First used, I believe, in relation to the England football squad's female companions who travelled to last year's world cup in Germany. Became famous for shopping and bitching about each other.
