is it possible to have a system to lock and unlock your front door to your house rather than using a key. Similar to the system used in a car?

I don't know but what a brilliant idea. If there isn't a design already you should definitely get onto it - I reckon you'd make a few quid!

PS! By jove look at this you can as well!

Your house actually gets locked? My house is always open because the kids keep losing their keys! They leave the place open! Why lock it when there are hundreds of keys out there! I am guessing that even if we locked it; it wouldn't matter! I tried the hide-a-key thing and that one never made it back to the hiding place! My wife and I have a key cut every week for at least one of them... I am waiting for the unlock by code system to arrive... like the garage door opener thing... Good luck with your quest, gotta go get some keys cut...!

Great idea - so long as it was fail proof and the price was right I'm sure it would be very popular.

Although I think it may have already been tried in the US.

I don't doubt there is someone working on the idea this very minute and even another working on how to make it more cost effective for the world market.

Yes, my dad installed one for an elderly lady who lived alone and was unable to run to the door to let folks in herself. She also used it when she had been out shopping, to let herself in without fumbling with keys. I am sorry I do not know the name of that system for you, but you might find it on Bob Villa's web site or DIY or This Old House, places like that for repairs and upgrading living spaces. Good luck!

Yes I have. Before I moved to where I am at now my child and I went out the back sliding glass door to the yard and as soon as I shut the door I heard the security bar come down and latch to the door. I just stood there with this oh **** look on my face. I did not have the keys to the front door with me. Thank goodness my child was small enough for me to push him up through the window that I left open onto the kitchen table and told him to open the front door. But boy was I ever freaking out inside until I realized I left the kitchen window open.

The idea has been tried a number of times in the UK by various manufacturers but none of the designs passed the building regulations requirments for emergency egress from the building in the event of a fire.
