I assume this is to reduce noise?

I think it would work fine, but as already mentioned be careful your fish are not harmed by it. I think the biggest risk you run is lowering the available oxygen produced by the falling water breaking the surface of the water in your tank. You may want to add a small airstone to keep your water oxygenated....

I would imagine as long as the string isn't going to leech any chemicals or dyes into the water it would be fine. You may be losing a tiny bit of the gas exchange by not having as much of a surface disruption. However, I am guessing your wanting to use the string to reduce noise. I would recommend using something like fishing line, just make sure it wont come loose and your fish end up eating it.

Not really, but string will eventually disintigrate and fall apart and could possibly get stuck in your filter. Is this to reduce splashing noise? Just raise the water level, that will reduce the noise by maybe 90%.

I'm confused. Why do you want the water to run down string?
