The above answer is correct. Another kind of vortex is the little whirlpool that forms at the drain when you empty a bath tub or sink.

Excellent question. Vortices are closed circulations or centers of maximum vorticity. Examples in nature are tornadoes and hurricanes although generally a vortex is thought of as a circulation of smaller spatial scales than the hurricane. Another example from nature would be the dustdevil formed on a hot summer day that becomes visible when it draws dust from the ground into the vortex of air.
