I had an abortion when I was 18 the father was abusive and it was a relally bad time in my life, my periods were irregular but still would happen. After the abortion (I was 4 weeks pregnant) my periods started to become even more infrequent and almost none existant. Then after about 2 years it went back to being fairly normal again, but now (for the past 2 years) I think I have maybe 5-6 periods a year, they're very infrequent and when they do come, it's usally no more than a two or three days and very light. Does this mean I'm infertile? Could the abortion have caused it? Is this something that would be correctable or not? I have found someone I really loves and who i want to have and raise kids with, and would hate to think I could never have them. I haven't gone to an OB/GYN to find out yet, but I plan to, in the mean time I'd appreciate any thoughts or info on this.

It sounds like there is a lot of drama in your life and that it's a good thing you didn't drag a poor little child through that time of your life.

That said, infrequent periods does not necessarily mean that you are less fertile. Lots of women need a push to get their cycles on track. For many, they take a regular 28 day birth control pill for three to six months and then never have a problem again. Other women take an herbal supplement called Monk's Pepper or Chaste Tree Berry for a few months and it regulates the cycle too.

It's very unlikely that your abortion had/has anything to do with your cycle right now. You don't mention your weight. If you have less than 10% body weight, your periods might stop, or if you have more than 30% body weight, it could be a symptom of a condition called PCOS which is a hormone imbalance.

The most important thing you can do for your reproductive health are:

1. quit smoking
2. Take pre-natal vitamins all the time, not just when you're trying to conceiver or pregnant
3. Eat a well-balanced diet with 5 servings of fruit and veg each day
4. Focus on your emotional growth and relationship health
5. Read the artilcles linked to below to learn about controlling your fertility.

Good luck and I hope your life starts to unfold happily.

if you have 5-6 periods a year, and theyre the same days apart, and you bleed for 2-3 days, then thats your cycle. If you have one period 50 days, and then another at 30 or something like that THEN you're irregular.

The only way to know is to check if youre ovulating. Buy some strips off ebay, you can get 50 for 20 bucks and pee on one every day for a while.

I have never experienced fertility drugs, but I do know that you do not need to have a regular cycle to get preg. My cycle will range from 20-40 days. Very funny, but it happens. For over two years I had a 28 day cycle and all of a sudden it changed. There were even times I did no get my period for two months and I still conceived a healthy little girl. Sorry I could not be more help. I just wanted to tell you from experience I did conceive even though my cycle was all over the board. Best of luck!!!

My wife and I have just conceived after an abortion. She had periods that lasted 40-42 days, then would skip a few months and have no period. I would suggest going to a ob/gyn and getting hormones to force a period. Those drugs got my wife back on a regular cycle in 2 months. now the first try with clomid and the Clear blue easy monitor, we are expecting.

Abortions can affect you ability to conceive. Sadly, not enough information is given to women before they have one.
However, an irregular period does not mean that you are infertile. If you are only having one period a month, if may mean that only one of your ovaries is releasing eggs. While this may affect you ability to conceive (ie: you are fertile less often) it does not mean you are totally infertile.
I would recommend a visit to the doctor and an exam.
