no time soon.. blacks as the nation's largest minority group, the Census Bureau said Tuesday.

The Latino population grew to 37 million in July 2001, up 4.7 percent from April 2000. The black population increased 2 percent during the same period, to 36.1 million.

The estimates are the Census Bureau's first statistics on race and ethnicity since results from the 2000 census were released two years ago.

Many expect struggles of power and influence to follow, reports CBS News Correspondent Sandra Hughes.

"I hope this doesn't become a demographic political one-upmanship," says Roberto Suro of the Pew Hispanic Center.

In places like Los Angeles, bitter political campaigns have already tested the growing influence of Hispanics. When Antonio Villaragosa ran against James Hahn for mayor, he lost because Hahn captured the unified African-American vote, while Hispanics, who come from many different countries, don't always vote the same way.

"It's not clear they all have common political thoughts and goals the way blacks have used political power," says Suro.

But their purchase power is already well known: singer Jennifer Lopez is the country's top-earning entertainer; ad dollars reached an all-time high on Spanish-language television last year; and the Latin Grammy's moved for the first time to network television.

But more than money and power, the shift in minorities can be seen in the tapestry of the American neighborhood. In Los Angeles, one study found that unlike African-Americans, who are more integrated into white communities than ever, the growing Hispanic community remains tightly knit together because of the language barrier.

Census Bureau demographer Roberto Ramirez said it has long been expected that Hispanics would someday surpass blacks because their birth and immigration rates are higher.

"And the trend shows it will clearly be increasing more in the future," Ramirez said.

Hispanics now comprise nearly 13 percent of the U.S. population, which grew to 284.8 million in July 2001. That's up from 35.3 million, or 12.5 percent of the country's 281.4 million residents in April 2000.

Blacks make up 12.7 percent of the nation's population, up from 12.6 percent in April 2000. The black population grew by 700,000 in the 15 months after the census was released.

Whites remained the largest single population group, numbering about 199.3 million in July 2001, nearly 70 percent of all U.S. residents.

Asians are the next largest minority group after blacks and Hispanics, at about 12.1 million, or 4 percent of the population.

A breakdown by state was not released.

The 2000 census, for the first time, allowed people to check off more than one racial category, increasing the number of possible choices for racial origin from five in 1990 to 63.

It depends on who you call "white people ". Some say that Mexicans are not white. By the same reasoning, Italians, Greeks,French, and others are not "white" also.
If you want to take it farther and say non-whites include English, Irish, German, and others who are a pinkish-tan color. then yes, non-whites not only will be, but are the majority right now. As for me, I'm a rather light pinkish-tan, I really don't know any "whites".

Not very soon but it will be like that in the future. In the future white people will be the minority. Then will white people get special treatment?

I think we are all mixing so much it won't matter. One of the above posters said that Latin men like white women, a lot of Latinas like white men (reasons given include we're more romantic and not as threatened as threatened by smart women). Besides, if you're talking Latinas like Shakira, she's a shade or two whiter than me.

When white people went from minority to majority in the US, it was through illegal immigration, genocidal war against the indigenous people, and the disease white people brought with them.

If Latinos become the majority, it will be via illegal immigration.

Consider yourselves lucky.

Probably not, at this time Caucasians are 69.1% of the population. Black Americans are 12.1%, Asians are 3.6%, and 2.7% are "other". But you never know what's going to happen in the future, it shouldn't matter who is the majority. Most Americans are mixed race anyway, whether they what to admit it or not.

What makes the difference? In another ten generations, we'll all be a nice golden brown to light tan anyway. Wish I was born then, I burn and peel like Snow White! :)
I don't care if you're plaid...if you're a good person, you're a good person. If you're not, you're not. Color/race/religion, etc. does not determine if you are decent or not.
