Do women feel less secure in their ability to live independently because our society has taught them to be more dependant on men financially?

i think so. it is also looked down upon if you are older and still single. everyone says....so are you dating....when are you getting married. why do you need to have a guy in your life to be considered normal and successful. there are plenty of women with great jobs and a stable life that just dont want to be married. or they always feel bad for women when they are single later in life. "oh she still hasn't found someone" and then there are the women that can't be happy unless they have a man, they feel like that makes them. i guess because it has been so impressed on us that it's the natural progression of life. you grow up get married and have kids. if you don't....people think there is something wrong with you.

It's not so much that society says they need a man to support them any more, it's more that society judges women more on how good of a mother they are. Therefore, they are always looking to see a woman meet up with a man. Some women feel pressured into it, others do it of their own accord.
The only reason a woman NEEDS a man, is if she wants to have a baby without artificul insemination.

I don't think women feel financially dependent anymore as long as they don't have children to support. Loneliness and physical danger are more of the driving factors now. If something goes bump in the night I feel safer not being alone. If I get sick I have someone to drag me to the doctor if I'm not well enough. If I go missing someone will notice right away. Of course, a roommate would be just as effective - that's where the loneliness reason kicks in.

Unfortunately I have seen a lot of women in my generation who have to support their men. I think perhaps in my parents generation women felt more economically dependent on their men. Personally I would like to find a relationship where we are both equally contributing to the financial stability of the marriage.
