I am getting damp migration from the chimney stack into the living room. The stack needs to be re-pointed and made waterproof. I am getting conflicting advice on whether I can use normal morter to repoint or lime morter to protect the bricks from blowing. Has anybody solved a similar problem.

Most mortar has lime in it now. It doesn't really matter.
