Not in this generation.
Microsoft has about a one generation (Original Xbox) head start with Xbox live so Sony is trying to play catchup at this point. It also doesn't hurt that Microsoft is a company that has had a little experience with computers and networking.
The user interface and options for Xbox live is much more friendly than Sony's product. It won't be until PS4 that Sony will have a chance to even out the playing field of online network.
As far as the price goes I consider it null. Live makes you pay a little over $4 a month to use its services, which isn't too bad considering millions shell out $15 a month to play WoW. Sony's network is free but it is subject to unwanted advertisements and other annoyences that can be a nuisance. It does, however, save you about $50 a year.
Sony's network won't be able to catch up to live this generation but at least they started figuring it out. I doubt that there will be that great a difference in the next generation consoles in terms of online networking. Both companies should have their product fine tuned by that point.

I would have to say no. You cannot have a private chat with someone on the PS3 if they are not in the same game as you. The PS3 online chat system has half of the features that the Xbox Live does. I can talk to my boyfriend online if he's playing Saint's Row and I'm playing Oblivion. Pretty cool if you ask me.

I do believe it will be. I am buying one that replaces the XBOX 360. I really like the ease and use of XBOX Live but Im sick of paying for it. Im sure there will be advertisments but PS3 is so much better all around than the 360.

No because Microsoft has been doing X-box live much longer than Sony so Microsoft is way more experienced and better when it comes to this.

I head that PS3 online network will be free. I have learned that you get what you pay for. Free Service = Advertisements galore, spyware, lag, no service, etc.
