Every 2-3 hours is the norm. But you should let your baby tell you when he/she needs to be fed.

It sounds about normal for a newborn. My son breastfed every 1-2 hours when he was a newborn and he was an almost 10 pound baby. Right now he feeds on demand. When he gets to be a little older, say around 7-8 weeks, a routine will start to be more clear in feeding him. Just a word of warning though, don't let yourself become a human pacifier! Good luck and congrats on your new arrival. :)

You won't overfeed if you are breastfeeding.
In the first week of life, a newborn's feeding pattern's are not well-established. They may powerfeed for two or three hours on end or they may feed every hour for 15-20 minutes.
Do not worry. Both are normal.
Your baby's body will naturally develop a normal feeding pattern (ie: breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, supper, a feed before bed and then one or two night feedings) by the time they are about 2 months. When you feed, be sure to completely drain one breast before you move him/her over to the other breast. This will not only help your milk supply, but it will ensure that your baby gets the fat and nutrient rich hind milk, keeping him/her feeling fuller for longer.
Also, as it ages, not every cry your baby makes will be for food. You'll be surprised at how quickly you will notice the difference. In a few weeks, you child may just want to be cuddled or held.

All babies are different. Exactly how old is he? They go through a growth spurt around 3 and 6 weeks and then 3 months. He may be going through a growth spurt. When my son went through a growth spurt he nursed about every hour and half. It sucks, but its worth it to stick with it. He's six months now and I'm going to continue nursing till he's a year old. Once your baby starts eating cereal and baby food he'll cut down on nursing so much. When Aidan got about 3 months old he nursed about every 2-3 hours. Now that he eats cereal and baby food its every 3-4 hours. Sometimes 5 hours and he goes to bed at 8:30 and wakes up around 8:30 in the morning. It will get better. I promise.

When babies are newborn follow their lead. If you are afraid you might not be producing enough milk (unlikely), check with your doctor. If you have a La Leche League group nearby there may be someone nearby to mentor you. They also have a web site that you can get lots of info from. www.lalecheleague.org

Congratulations and good luck. I agree that breast feeding is the best choice for many reasons!

On average about every 2 hours or so. Sometimes a little more and sometimes a bit less. But remember, every baby is different and requires their own special care. Follow your baby's cues. Before each feeding change your baby's diaper and get comfortable and enjoy.

Nursing for ten to 15 minutes per breast eight to 12 times every 24 hours is pretty much on target. You can check out www.babycenter.com to get all kinds of tips and tricks and answers to any questions you may have.

Every hour is not uncommon in the beginning. To get your milk supply established you want to breastfeed every two hours and no longer than four hours in between feedings. Your child knows best, if they act hunger feed them.

My little girl was 7.2 lbs and breastfeed literally every hour as well. It seemed like she was never quite full. Just watch and learn your baby's cues. I wouldn't worry about "overfeeding" him, if he is still latching on. Maybe ask your pediatrician for more advice, but I don't think that, if you follow your motherly instinct, you can go wrong. =)

Congratulations!
