Wouldn't the lease be automatically broken when one person moved, since a joint lease was signed?

Unfortunately, that's not the way the rental office looks at things. Check your lease and read it thoroughly for details. Since it's for military relocation, you may have a loophole. If it becomes a problem, I would contact a lawyer who offers free advise over the telephone and ask them how to proceed. No the lease isnt broken. The tenant with the military relocation is excused from the lease, but not the other person. The other person isnt being relocated. The remaining person is still responsible for the remainder of the lease.
