A CD-R can only have something recorded on it once. A CD-RW is rewritable so if you mix a CD and you don't like it you can delete the CD and make a new one. I use the CD-RW's to record downloadable audiobooks from my library and not have to spend a fortune or go to the library to drop off or pick up new ones.

This was my college book I think :)

CD-R = write once read many
CD-RW = Write and read many

Once a CD-R is burned its over you can not write to it again
a CD-RW have two different ways to write to it.. You can use software that can format that CD to write to just like a hard drive or a memory stick or you can write to it just like you would a CD-R. then erase it.

One (R) can record once!!! the other one ( RW) is rewritable so it is able to record over things you dont want anymore.
